![]() I did something similar with vintage Gretsch drums, publishing a guide in late 2011. ![]() It may take a while for the new information to gain acceptance, but I think it gives an edge to people who have better information with which to judge the date and authenticity of vintage drums. It provides an improved tool for those attempting to authenticate vintage drums. I hope that my effort raises the level of the discussion about dating of drums. ![]() I also looked at changes in numerous physical characteristics and linked those changes to date stamp and serial number ranges. I reviewed each of the published guides and then presented my own guide based upon over one thousand reports of serial number/date stamp pairs from vintage Ludwig drums. These warnings are often overlooked when people use the date tables in isolation without knowledge of how the tables were put together. ![]() The authors of each of the prior guides suggest caution when using their information to estimate dates. If one looks at the original sources of the information, these limitations are much more clear. Some of the other dating resources are limited because they are based upon relatively small numbers of drums.
